The Oral-Systemic Axis: Infection, Inflammation and Cancer
Chronic systemic inflammation is increasingly recognised as a key contributor to the pathogenesis of a wide range of non-communicable diseases, including cancer. A significant, yet frequently underappreciated, source of this inflammatory burden is chronic, low-grade infection - particularly within the oral cavity.

Lesson series
What's included?
This lecture will examine the role of oral infections, periodontal disease, and dysbiosis of the oral microbiome as persistent drivers of systemic immune activation. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanistic pathways linking chronic infection to sustained inflammatory signalling, including cytokine dysregulation, immune modulation, and alterations in local and systemic micro-environments that may contribute to the development and progression of non-communicable diseases, including cancer.

Dr. Sebastijan Perko
Dr. Sebastjan Perko, DDS, PhD, is an expert in oral surgery and an expert in integrative medicine, with a special focus on the connection between dental health, chronic infection, and systemic disease. His work centres on identifying hidden sources of inflammation - particularly within the oral cavity - and understanding their role in the development of complex conditions, including non-communicable diseases and cancer.
Combining surgical expertise with a whole-body, patient-centred approach, Dr. Perko helps bridge the gap between dentistry and systemic health. He regularly lectures on the oral-systemic axis and its clinicalimplications in modern integrative practice.
